Quantitative Analysis of COVID-19

Updated: May 25, 2020

Selection of Labels and Info

Three countries were selected for my sample because they have the most positive cases as of today, and data on the amount of positive cases specific to the month of March was available.

Because the month of March has recently concluded, the data would be more helpful and accurate. If the graph was based on older data (e.g. December 2019 or January 2020), the results would be very different. The pandemic had not begun its course of destruction yet.

For the y-axis, an interval of 3000 is used because it emphasizes the difference between the countries while leaving a comfortable space between numbers.

Purpose

The purpose of this graph is to reflect on our progress from the last month, and hopefully find signs that suggest a flattening of the curve. Although this graph proves that flattening the curve is only a pipe dream, a continuance of this report will track our progress, and help us make an inference regarding the downfall of this virus.

Analysis

It is observed that some of the countries’ lines seem to be steadily increasing while some others are almost plateauing. The United States almost in a 45 degree angle, which means the amount of positive cases is snowballing. Spain’s line contains many spikes, which suggests their progress is not consistent. On the contrary, Italy is nearly a straight line that barely has a difference between the first day and the last. It is evident that Italy reaches its pinnacle on March 13th with around 5000 cases.
